Mod Of The Month - toografik4u - February 2006
- Why did you decide to go with a biohazard theme?
I thought it would be pretty cool, and hadn't seen too many of them around, I wanted something different.
- Why did you use a fan grill instead of a custom jewel?
Once again, wanted to be a little different, everyone's got a custom or clear jewel. And the biohazard was pretty hot looking.
- Can you explain the power button on the top of the case, and how you got it there?
Well, first I reversed the buttons, so big was power and small eject. Then I had an extra power/eject pcb laying around so I thought it would be hot to have the big power button and light diffuser in the middle of the biohazard symbol, so I switched the wires so one button on each pcb was functioning, then cut the hole and mounted the pcb on the top.
- Does it still have a working eject button?
Yes, the eject button is still the original power button and is still in its original position on the front.
- How did you paint the white biohazard logo?
I had a vinyl sticker that I put down after painting the entire box white. Then painted the orange and peeled up the sticker.
- What did you do with the empty power button hole?
I took another light diffuser and the lens from the MS DVD dongle and modified them so they would fit together and fit that hole, then I hardwired the IR reciever behind there. Once again something I hadn't seen before and thought would be cool. I think it makes it look like thats where the IR reciever was meant to be.
- What type of modchip do you have installed?
I have the Xecuter 3
- What do you display on your LCD screen?
All the normal stuff, except instead of teeamxecuter.com it says Hazey Daze its a play off of my last name and is what people at school call me.
- To paint the control panel did you take the parts out or mask them off?
I took everything out to paint it, including the LCD. And I took the LCD apart to paint the frame of it too, well I messed it up, so I had to order anoter LCD screen and this time just taped it out realy good.
- Did you add any lights your case?
I have controller port lights and changed to power/eject LEDs of course. At one point I also had vent lights but decided to take them out. Why did I take them out? I couldnt tell ya that one.
- What do you use the USB ports on your Xbox for?
Wireless keyboard and mouse for Linksbox every now and then.
- What other hardware upgrades have you performed on your Xbox?
80 GB hard drive, which will be getting upgraded to 160-200 soon.
- If you don't mind us asking, about how much did the entire project cost you?
Actually, this didn't cost me much at all. I got the XBox for christmas last year from my mom. And since I had done some research and my girlfriend new my mom was getting me the Xbox, she knew what chip to buy me and so she got me the chip the same christmas. Then this January my mom got me the X3CP for my birthday. And after I messed up the LCD from the X3CP by girlfriend bought me the replacement LCD (which my mom doesnt know about, lol). So all I have really had to pay for was solder, soldering iron, wire, LEDs, paint, fan grill, and the extra light diffuser. I would say somewhere around $50-60.
- About how long did your entire project take?
Well, total it was about a year because everything was spread out. The initial paintjob, jewel hole w/ fan grill, and LEDs took about a week last January. Then I really didn't do anything else to it for a while. This past summer did the power/eject reversal and moving to the top. It took a day or two. Then in about November I did the dvd hardwiring and fitting into the front, that only took one night. And then the X3CP in January which took a couple days to get all together.
- Are you happy with the overall result of your Xbox?
Yes, I am very happy with the way my XBox has turned out. I love going to different things at school like NCAA football tournaments, just so I can volunteer my Xbox to show it off and see everyones reaction. I love it.
- What was the hardest part of your project?
The hardest part I would say was moving the power button to the top, because I dont have any "real" tools, so I had to do it the ghetto way. I started by making a small hole in the middle of the biohazard symbol with a screwdriver, the a little bigger screwdriver, and then I rolled up some sand paper and made it big enough for it to fit. I know, ghetto, but it worked.
- Do you plan on modifying your Xbox further or modifying another?
Probably just the bigger hard drive, lights on the dvd drive when it opens, maybe another fan or two, hardwiring a router, and a jewel light to finish it off. Oh yeah and the X3IR. Other than that probably not. Unless I get a really cool idea. But I have a lot of guys here at school talking about getting me to do theirs, so we will see about other Xboxes.
- What was the most interesting thing you learned while doing this mod?
I found everything very interesting. I started out with no Xbox reading the forums on this site and a few others and seeing what all could be done. Then I finally got mine and tried to do something different. I also learned that you could do anything if you just think about it and plan it out first, without rushing into it.
- Is there anything else you would like to mention?
I also have the wireless doorbell power button mod, as well as an s-controller power button under the jewel (push the jewel to push the button) and the controllers are painted to match. One orange with white trim and the other white with orange trim. Also, thanks to everyone here for all the great ideas and support!
